Bow Tie Basics

Bow Tie Basics

Bow ties have been around for quite some time now, and like all fashion items have evolved and transformed into many styles. Bow Ties are very much a statement piece of menswear and how and when to wear one can often feel a little confusing. So here are a few basic rules.

WHEN AND WHERE?

When is the right occasion to wear a bow tie? Well we will tell you anytime, but most bow ties are associated with more formal events. Black or white tie events. Weddings. Graduations, fine dining etc. Although the humble bow tie has become more than just a formalwear accessory of late. With so many different styles and exciting fabrics, you can wear one everyday. But as a general rule, everyday should be kept casual, through funky or fun patterns to plain block colours and cotton based fabrics. Save your sleek silks, and black bow ties for those more formal events.

PRE-TIED vs SELF-TIE?

The age old question, should you wear a pre-tied bow tie or a self tie bow tie? Honestly, this comes down to personal choice. Pre-Tied bow ties keep things nice and simple. They offer a crisp finish and in our opinion, you can play with the structure and finish a bit more, offering some truly fun and unique designs. There are however some bow tie wearers who will only tie their own. Self-Tie bow ties are definitely the more traditional option and more favoured for formal events. If you're confident in your bow knots then this may be the more appealing option for you. If you're perhaps dressing a fleet of groomsmen, you may wish to stick to a pre-tied bow tie for convenience and piece of mind on your big day.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IT WITH?

Like any item of clothing, you should firstly feel comfortable with the fit and finish of your bow tie. Make sure it adjusts to the correct neck width and whilst being a statement piece, it shouldn't drown out the rest of your look. Most bow ties are suited to wing collar shirts. Or a collar which sits wide enough to give the bow tie space. Black Bow ties are typically teamed with suits and tuxedos. These can come in a variety of shapes, from the classic butterfly to a slim finish and a diamond edge. Again this is personal choice but do make sure the shape is flattering. Patterned bow ties, such as tartan, are best suited to accompany matching tartan items, like a kilt or trews. Liberty prints are busy and look best paired with plain suits of a grey or blue colour palette for example. Adding a pocket square and/or matching cufflinks, compliments the bow tie perfectly in this case.

HOW TO TIE A BOW TIE?

Tying a self-tie bow tie can be tricky. Thankfully there are numerous how to videos available online via You tube and social media channels. You can either take a step by step guide through pictures or a guided video. Find one that works for you and keeps it simple. Once you've got it, wear with pride!
